How to choose an international online high school
The best international online high school is the one whose diploma, transcript and schedule fit the next step your student plans to take, whether that is a university in the US, a university at home or a job. This guide covers what a US diploma means outside the US, how study works across time zones, and what English proficiency means for US college applications.
What a US diploma means in another country
A US private school issues its own diploma, so each country and each university decides how to read it. Two steps come up often.
- Credential evaluation. An independent service reviews a transcript and writes a report that compares the courses and grades to the US system. NACES is a US association of these services. Some colleges name the services they prefer, so check each admissions page.
- Apostille. Under the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, a country can issue one certificate that lets a public document be used in another member country. The Hague Conference says only a designated Competent Authority can issue an apostille. In Florida, the Department of State is that authority, and its list of public documents includes school transcripts and diplomas. The apostille confirms the signature and seal on the document. It does not grade the content.
Ask the university, employer or ministry in your country what it needs before you order anything. Some ask for an evaluation, some for an apostille, some for both, and some for neither. Forest Trail Academy has a page on apostille for international students, and a page on the American high school diploma for international students.
Studying from another time zone
Time zones matter when a school holds live classes at set hours. A self-paced school lets the student work when it is daytime at home. Ask any school whether lessons, tests and teacher help need a fixed time, and which time zone it uses. Forest Trail Academy is self-paced and enrolls students any week of the year. Read our guide to online school across time zones. If your family is relocating, see moving abroad with school-age children.
English proficiency and US college applications from abroad
Each US college sets its own English rules, and the same application platform, Common App, serves colleges with different requirements. As one example, Yale lists the TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test and other exams, and asks for a test from non-native speakers who have not studied in English for at least two years of secondary school. Check the international admissions page of every college on the list.
For the SAT, College Board lets students outside the US and its territories register for international testing online. Not every college asks for SAT or ACT scores, so confirm that first.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best international online high school?
It is the school that matches your student’s goal. Check accreditation, teacher qualifications, schedule, the diploma and transcript, and whether your target university accepts them. The table above lists each check.
Do I need an apostille for a US high school diploma?
Only if the receiving country or institution asks for one. An apostille confirms the signature on a document for use in another Hague Convention country. Ask the university or ministry first.
Does my child need an English test to apply to a US college?
It depends on the college. Many accept the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test, and some waive the test for students who studied in English. Read each college’s international admissions page.
Can my child study from a different time zone?
Yes, with a self-paced program that has no fixed class times. Confirm how tests and teacher support are scheduled before you enroll.
